Tips / Shopping smarter

Plan first, then shop

Most overspending at the store happens before you get there: no plan, no list, and a cart filled by what looks good. Fifteen minutes of planning a week fixes most of it.

What to do

Start with what you have
Check the fridge, freezer and pantry first. Build at least one or two meals around things that need using up.
Plan dinners, not every meal
Most families do well planning five dinners a week and keeping simple breakfasts and lunches on repeat.
Reuse ingredients across meals
Buy one bag of onions, one big pack of chicken thighs or one bunch of cilantro and use it in two or three meals.
Write the list by store section
Grouping the list by produce, dairy, meat and pantry makes shopping faster and cuts impulse aisles.
Plan a leftovers night
One night a week of leftovers or "clean out the fridge" meals reduces waste and cooking time.

Ask yourself

  • Which meals did my household actually eat last week, and which got skipped?
  • What needs to be used up in the next three days?
  • Which nights will be busy, and need something quick?
